Guest Speaker
Scott Walz, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Hydrologist, scott.walz@shakopeedakota.org or 952-496-6123Scott described their experience with vegetated (or living) roofs, covering the components of a vegetated roof including the soils, sub layer, plants and irrigation, and discuss cost, maintenance and other issues.
Additional Notes:
- On reclamation facility, heating and cooling were one third of what was expected? On ice arena, changes in soils and plant types yielded $7.75/sq. ft vs. $11/sq. ft. Other cost increased $1.50/sq. ft. Difficult to apply these cost numbers to other sites, given the variables involved.
- Questions for investigation: Irrigation -- is this is truly sustainable. Also, will wildlife really use the habitat?
- Less temperature swing between day/night temp on a green roof vs.conventional roof. Average is the same. Green roofs maintain temperature about freezing; non-green maintain at air temperature.
- Plants must be able to complete their lifecycle, if this is a true ecosystem. Plants on roof do grow, flower, and produce seed. Not going to have functioning ecosystem without irrigation, in a Minnesota-type climate.
Q&A
Do Sedums show enhanced growth and support pollinators?
- They did see pollinators using the sedum, primarily honeybees. What about native wildflowers?
- Have really long roots, hard to use even for drought tolerant. Need plants from thin soiled areas in your region.Did they need to control roof grade and could they follow contour of the building?
For Mohegan, hard to put a value on the PR of the project. Much publicity and tours of the Shakopee Mdewakanton site.
